A.S. BARNARD FAMILY

My Great Grandfather came to Naperville area in 1838 (just seven years after the County was organized.) They eventually lived on what is now Seven Bridges on Hobson Road. When they started that subdivison, our family was invited there for a presentation of a beautiful bronze placque which is in it’s place on the brick entrance way. It says “Barnard Miller Homestead settled in 1865 by A.S.Barnard- Pioneer Farmer- Town Official and State Representative- Site of the Hobson Road Oak – DuPage County’s oldest Burr Oak”. Our family is quite proud of that spot!

My grandfather, Daniel Dewey Barnard moved from “up the road a piece” to that farm when he was twelve. After many years he got married to Helen Stone from Oak Park. They had four children. My mother, Rose Miller, married my father , Charles Miller, in 1918 after he worked the farm for my elderly grandfather. He and his brother John were brought over from Servia several years before. They were both excellent farmers. My mother graduated from North (Central Western) College in 1906 and went to work as Nichols librarian and after she had to go home to care for her invalid mother, Mattie Egerman took over! My dad, Charles Miller, only had two years of schooling so when a college graduate married him, she taught him many things- she read to him every evening from the vast library they had and the newspaper- and so he became quite well oriented to the American way.

I had two brothers, Robert Dewey, who is and EE, retired, in New Hampshire, and Donald Charles, who for many years was the Fair Manager of DuPage County, who passed away in 1987.

John Zedrow married into our family in 1946 and we have 4 children, Dan, Jo, Don, and Martha. We now have 10 grandchildren.

He is retired teacher from Hinsdale after 35 years, and is now the Buildings and Grounds Manager of the DuPage County Fairgrounds. On summer and over weekends, he worked at the Fairgrounds as Don Miller’s “right hand man”, since the 50’s so it was logical that he was asked to take over the job when Don died quite suddenly in April, 1987. He and Don’s secretary Audrey Rowe, along with all the Association members, had the Fair that year without too many “hitches”. Since that time, they have hired a full time manager so that my husband can keep away from all that paper work! He loves that the fairgrounds, however and looks forward to the Fair each year and the many new challenges.

Many Barnards are buried here in the Naperville cemetery, including my great grandparents, grandparents, parents and uncles, aunts, and cousins. The rest are buried in Mendon, New York. Our son Don has visited the area and found out they have a whole corner dedicated to Timothy Barnard, who was George Washington’s paymaster!

Our oldest son, Dan (wife Patti), live in Marietta, Georgia. She’s a CPA for McMillan Blodel International Lumber Company. He is Dist. Manager for United Tech S.E. they have a “miracle invitro” daughter, Jayme.

Our oldest daughter, Jo (Bob) Walter, lives in Steeple Run- she’s the manager for the clubhouse. Her husband Bob works for a computer company. Their children, Rob, Rick, and Cori are teenagers – need I say more?

Our younger son, Don (Linda) lives in Montgomery. He teaches at Lincoln and does many activites with his three sons, Matt, Pat, and Joel (twins0.

Our youngest, Martha (Chip_ Heun lives in Minooka. Chip is part owner of a chemical company and she is our nurse at the County Fair. They are also involved with their children’s multiple activities. Sometimes Granny and Bo (John) get to watch!
