JOSEPH SCHWARTZ FAMILY

Joseph H. Schwartz and Julia Gartner were married in 1906 in SS Peter and Paul Church. In 1908 they purchased 63 acres of land which was the Charles Manbeck farm locate on North Columbia Street about two blocks north of the Burlington Railroad.

The products from City Side farm were shipped to Chicago by freight and later by truck for firms using horses for transportation.

Joseph was the son of Ferdinand Schwartz who immigrated to America in 1846 and settled on a farm midway between Naperville and Lisle.

Joseph and Julia operated City Side farm until 1936 when they retired. The land was sold in 1977 to Macon Corporation and has been named Columbia Estates.

Joseph died in 1956 and his wife passed away in 1970. They are survived by five daughters: Irene, Bernice, Catherine Reuss, Mary Buccini and Ruth Makins.
